The owners’ interior designer daughter asked me to help her provide her parents with a calm, Mediterranean courtyard inspired garden within this long, narrow plot. Her Italian father longed to sit and tend his fish by a pond. Starting with a simple dining terrace outside the kitchen with raised beds for herbs and seasonal flowers the eye is drawn across a textural divide of slate shale to a square fishpond with a gently bubbling fountain. Echoing the raised beds on the kitchen terrace a rendered bench with cushions sits adjacent to the pond. A beloved Victorian lamp post stands sentinel over the remaining lawn bordered with existing trees and new low maintenance shrubs.
